Illustrare, journeys of science illustration in Portugal

This exhibit is a deep dive to the historic and contemporary presence of science illustration in Portugal. It is the result of more than 20 years of research and gathering of images and objects by a core team of four artists that curated the exhibit and produced its catalog—Nuno Farinha, Ana Teresa Bigio, Pedro Salgado, and myself.

Hosted by the National Museum of Natural History and Science in Lisbon, the exhibit displays a vast collection of illustrations made by Portuguese artists and/or made in Portugal during the last six centuries. Among examples of the first printed books to the most modern digital techniques to generate static and moving images, the exhibit also includes museum specimens and models created for the setting.

The exhibit catalog is digitally available here.
